The Hawks bowed out of the Isuzu FA Trophy at the Third Round stage on spot kicks at the hands of Vanarama National League side Woking.
After a cagey start to the tie, it was the Hawks who struck first through Ryan Seager. A delivery into the area found the run of McNerney who fired at goal, Jaaskelainen made the initial save but Ryan Seager was on hand to fire in the rebound to put the Hawks ahead.
That lead was short lived however as a turnover in the centre of the park saw Woking canter forward with numbers, a ball into the box saw the run of Jermaine Anderson at the back post who converted from close range to level the tie.
The hosts continued to probe but saw a header from close range saved by Dudzinski as the Hawks then were able to set themselves away heading up the other end. The ball was worked upfield to Seager who saw the run of Anderson with the switch of play. Keane drove up the line before picking out Seager with his delivery into the area. He got the strike away but saw his effort blocked.
Another chance would come shortly after for the Hawks, this time it was Kealy who was found in a pocket of space he took his man on and fashioned the space for a strike. His effort flashed across the face of goal and wide of the far post leaving Jaaskelainen outstretched.
With 10 minutes left of the first half, the Hawks found themselves with a golden opportunity to take the lead. After Kealy won a corner off Akinola, the delivery into the area wasn’t dealt with by the hosts and a loose ball fell to the feet of Atangana with his back to goal. On the turn he poked an effort at goal that ended up narrowly the wrong side of the post.
Substitute Tom Leahy would give Woking the lead after a freekick was awarded against the Hawks. The ball was sent into the area and nodded down into the area, the initial effort was met with a block before the ball fell to Leahy who hit the ball into a crowd and would see the strike hit the back of the net with some help from a deflection.
The Hawks went in search of an immediate response but saw Ryan Seager’s headed effort met with a block before Woking would eventually clear their lines.
HALF TIME: WOKING 2-1 HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE
The second half would get underway with a lot less pace than the first finished with the hosts looking to try and dominate the play. Few chances were created by either side with both looking to hold their defences firm and probe the opposition.
A key moment in the game would see big appeals from the Hawks waved away. Leon Maloney was threaded through on goal, he got onto the ball and looked to drive away from Chicksen. His last man tackle brought Maloney down but nothing was given.
Another big talking point would come in the build up to Woking’s 3rd goal, Dennon Lewis and Devante Stanley came together off the ball, with the Hawks fullback going down clutching his leg. Lewis was left in a world of space and had a free run at goal before hammering the ball into the roof of the net at the near post with the Hawks left perplexed over what happened in the build-up.
The Hawks would get one back with 7 minutes to play through Ryan Seager again. A freekick from deep was won by Brendan Willson, looping goalwards, with Ryan Seager on hand to bundle it home giving a lifeline in the tie.
Seager would complete his hattrick just moments later as Brendan Willson got his head to another delivery as the ball fell into Ryan’s path he made no mistake on firing past Jaaskelainen to draw the Hawks level into the final few minutes.
A chance to win it would fall to Brendan Willson as Joe McNerney flicked on a corner. Brendan got on the end of the flick but under pressure he managed to get contact on the ball but the header was tame as Jaaskelainen was able to make the stop.
FULL TIME: WOKING 3-3 HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE
Shooting towards the terrace packed with Woking fans, it was the hosts who started the shootout.
Alan Judge struck the base of the post with Ryan Seager scoring his spot kick to give the Hawks the advantage after 1.
Jamie Andrews managed to just squeeze his penalty past the outstretched glove of Dudzinski to open Wokings account before Harvey Bradbury saw his kick saved by Jaaskelainen.
Cian Harries converted his spot kick before Leon Maloney fired his into the top corner leaving it at 2-2 after three penalties each.
Substitute Dale Gorman followed Leon Maloney in finding the top corner with his effort before Reuben Austin saw his strike saved to leave Woking with a score to win kick to follow.
Matt Ward made no mistake in converting to end the Hawks run in the Trophy but with a display to be proud of.
