The hosts started brightly and went close inside the opening 15 minutes. The chance fell to Owusu. The forward driving inside and striking low, only to see his effort rebound back off the base of the post.
Ryan Seager then almost broke the deadlock midway through the half after being picked out smartly by Laidlaw. Controlling well on the turn, Seager struck first time but his effort flew narrowly over the bar.
As the half went on, the Hawks continued to ask questions of the visitors’ defence. Whittingham carried the ball forward before releasing Harvey Laidlaw on the overlap, but the Chichester City goalkeeper was equal to the effort and kept the scores level.
Both sides had their fair share of possession in the first half, with the Hawks having the clearest chances.
HALF TIME: HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE 0-0 CHICHESTER CITY
Just after the restart a shot from Dunn outside the box caught Hawks goalkeeper Dudzinski off guard. The strike wrong-footed him and found the bottom corner, giving Chichester City an unlikely lead so early in the second half.
The Hawks almost responded instantly. Just a minute later, Laidlaw’s smart ball into Seager set up Whittingham for a great chance, but the forward blazed his effort well over the bar, letting the visitors off the hook.
The hosts continued to press, and on the hour mark, a chaotic moment almost saw the game take another twist. Whittingham chased down a loose ball and collided with Chichester goalkeeper Magee, who had come off his line to clear. Play was allowed to continue, and Chichester launched a dangerous counter-attack. Bello raced forward, but Dudzinski made a superb sliding challenge to snuff out the danger.
The visitors came even closer to doubling their lead in the when Clarke’s shot from distance slipped through Dudzinski’s hands and rattled the crossbar, with the Hawks’ goalkeeper fortunate to avoid an embarrassing moment .
Late in the game the Hawks went down to 10 men after Leo Young received a second yellow card.
The Hawks struggled to create any meaningful chances in the second half, and the visitors held firm to progress to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup. It’s back to league action for the Hawks next Saturday as they host Plymouth Parkway at Westleigh Park.
